An Apprenticeship is a program that trains a candidate to become skilled in a particular trade. It is a combination of classroom learning with hands-on work in the industry under the industry experts.
An apprentice is a person who has entered into a contract of apprenticeship with the employer for apprenticeship training under the Apprentices Act

What is NAPS?

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is a scheme of Government of India to promote apprenticeship. It was launched on19th August 2016. Apprenticeship Training consists of Basic Training and On-the-Job Training/Practical Training at workplace in the industry.
The NAPS is effective from notification date of 19th August, 2016.

It includes 2 parts

1. Basic Training

A candidate will learn basic training (STT) in a particular skill set. The duration will be of 3 months

2. On-the-job Training

A candidate will learn and improvise their skills set in industry under industry experts. The duration will be of 6 months – 2 years

There are two types of trades under Apprenticeship-

1. Designated Trades

Those notified by the Government are referred to as” Designated Trades” https://apprenticeshipindia.org/trades?type=designated

2. Optional Trades

The other trades which are not included in the notified list of the Designated Trades but opted as a Trade/Course to be run under the Apprentices Act by an establishment. These are referred to as “Optional Trades”. https://apprenticeshipindia.org/trades?type=optional

Main objective

The main objective of the scheme is to promote apprenticeship training and to increase the engagement of apprentices.
Benefits under NAPS are:

FOR STUDENTS

  • Students get a prescribed Stipend from industry during their apprenticeship period

FOR EMPLOYERS

  • Sharing of 25% of the stipend, maximum upto Rs 1500/- per apprentice per month by the Government

FOR TRAINING PROVIDER

  • Sharing of cost of training with Training Provider; upto INR 7500/- for 3 months/500 hours

  • What is Apprenticeship Training?
    Apprenticeship training is a course of training in an industry or establishment, under a contract of apprenticeship which consists of :-
    a) basic training component and
    b) on-the-job-training (OJT)/practical training at workplace.

    National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is a scheme of Government of India to provide financial support to establishments undertaking the apprenticeship training. NAPS was launched on 19th August 2016.
  • Who implements the Apprenticeship Program (including NAPS)?
    The Apprenticeship Program in India under the Apprenticeship Act 1961 is implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) at the National level. The MSDE has entrusted the Directorate General of Training [DGT] to implement the apprenticeship training falling under” Designated Trades” and made the National Skill Development Corporation [NSDC] responsible for apprenticeship training under “Optional Trades”.   • What is the duration of BT?
    Basic Training usually accounts for 20-25% of the duration of the overall Apprenticeship Program but can vary depending on the specific requirement of the curriculum.
